It was one of those phone calls no one wants to receive, but after receiving it, my sister-in-law sent out a group text that her step-son was in intensive care. He was on his way to work when he suddenly blacked out at the wheel. After a few days of tests, CT-Scans, blood work and pondering, the diagnosis came. It wasn’t good. Her step-son is a single dad with full custody of three young children ranging from an energetic 2-year old, to a 5 and 7 year old, and to hear that he had any form of cancer was a devastating blow. He is the sole provider for the family.
Although his form of cancer is treatable and he will survive, he has already had nearly a month of hospitalization and the associated tests, transportation and care for his minor children. All of that has associated costs. Add to that the time he had to take off work, and now more time off and the costs of treating the cancer. It could put his family into a financially difficult situation without critical illness insurance.
Whether or not he had any symptoms he ignored before that day are irrelevant. One day this young man was seemingly on his way to a normal day and within hours his world was upside down. That’s the way critical illness robs us of our livelihood. With an income protection plan in place, this kind of situation doesn’t have to put our families into financial ruin. An income protection plan will not only help cover the out-out-of pocket costs for treatments, but also help meet the needs of the family. The children in this case needed care and were able to be provided for by family members and child care workers as needed, and their transportation costs were met as well.
Cancer, heart disease and stroke don’t often warn us as to their coming, but we can prepare by having a critical illness policy in place. The peace of mind of knowing that if or when something does happen we aren’t financially devastated by the mounting costs of medical bills, aftercare and transportation, or lost wages is priceless.
